Okay, I should be practicing Walton’s Partita for Orchestra, but I need to say a few things about the current Dancing with the Stars which performed its first classical night.
1) Classical music on primetime television with a 46-piece orchestra? YES! Even if it’s the greatest hits. Do you know how rare it is to see and hear any orchestra on tv anymore?
2) Violinist David Garrett playing a tacky pop arrangement of Beethoven’s Fifth? Boo.
3) Sugar Ray taking ballet class to prepare for Tchaikovsky’s Flower Waltz? Hilarious.
4) Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins singing? Lovely.
5) The judges are colorful characters. Wow.
I am admittedly mesmerized by powerful emotion and passion all the dancers convey through the music.
